Five Things to like about the Cleveland/Yankees Series...

I can't even claim credit for this one - as taken from an E-mail from Rich Young, a guy Brad and I are involved with in what can best be described as a longitudinal fantasy baseball experiment:

1--Steinbrenner's ultimatum means that he will now REALLY screw up by firing Torre. It also means that he has gone yet another year without buying a world championship.
2--TBS showed a Yankee fan's sign, "Captain Clutch" just a few seconds before Jeter hit into a 4-6-3 double play that squashed a big comeback rally.
3--A-Rod finally getting an RBI after 55 postseason at bats. He still hasn't driven in a runner in scoring postion, however (zero for 13 and counting).
4--Yankee fans weeping
5--Johnny Damon ("I will never sign with the Yankees") looking so very, very SAD after the game. This cements one of the best deals the Red Sox never made. Not signing him (and driving the price up for both him and Clemens) was really brilliant on Theo's part.

That's good stuff.

Also, Mr. Brad, I just want to point out my confusion with your predictions. How is it that CC Sabathia stands to get hammered at home against the extremely suspect Yankees offense, but against the Red Sox on the road he is going to pitch a gem and get the win?

Could the unabashed, biased Yankees fan also be an unabashed, biased Red Sox hater?

In order, my responses:

1- True, although he's (by far) not the only guy trying to buy a WS champ and failing (see Mets, NY; Cubs, Chi; and Dodgers, LA, etc).

2- Also true, I think that play was the real turning point in the game. A hit there, and Cleveland gets VERY nervous. the DP happened, and all the air went out of the comeback.

3- Very true. For a guy that was the best player in baseball, bar none, in the regular season, ARod had some horrible swings this postseason. If you are ready to give him full credit (which even I have reluctantly done), for getting the Yanks to the playoffs, he certainly gets heat for falling on his rear this series. That said, PLEASE bring him back. I sent Dave a "worst case" Yanks team next year, it's not a pretty sight.

4- Uh, OK.

5- Rich and I talked about Damon when he signed, and I pegged it almost perfectly. He had one good year, on OK year, and is now a defensive liability who can't get his OPS much over .800. Horrible signing, period.

As for CC, call me a convert. Or, I could hate the Red Sox :-) In all seriousness, in many ways, the Red Sox and Yanks are built the same way, which is a good thing. The Sox just got on board with the "keep your own young guys" bit earlier. Otherwise, they spend like drunk sailors just like the Yanks do (Dice-K, Drew, Schilling, Beckett, any of the last 3 failed SS's), they just found the internal guys like Youk, Papelbon, Varitek, etc to supplement their FA spending. Hopefully, the Cano/Joba/Melky/Hughes set will help the Yanks do the same.
