Josh Beckett and other musings...
Not much to say about Josh Beckett except WOW. Last night for the Angels must have been what batters in high school felt like when facing Josh Beckett. Still one of the greatest stories is him, in some Texas High School league, throwing a six inning perfect game with 18 K's and a total of like five balls being fouled off in the entire game.
Some idiot Golf Weasel predicted two offensive teams to defeat two defensive teams during the division series, even though his mantra is defense wins in the playoffs.
Predictably, the best pitching won yesterday in all three games. Actually, that is arguable as Hamels and Francis pitched almost identically and Colorado was just able to bunch their hits together against Hamels. Still, it was the superior Rockies bullpen that finished off the game.
I think the Rice Owls won a football game last night. I was sitting at a sports bar with Rat-tat-two-E (which, no matter what the French think, should be how it is pronounced) and my viewing options between 8:07 and 9:05 were Rice/So. Miss college football and an NFL network replay of the Viking/Packer game. Riveting stuff in prime time during the MLB playoffs. Good call Bud.
Listening to Bud Selig on Mike and Mike in the morning and he states he is against instant replay because it will hurt the flow of the game. This makes sense if they are going to review every play, but seriously, how many plays over the course of a season need to be reviewed? You give each manager one review a game and allow him to use it on foul ball calls, force outs, tags and home runs. No review on balls and strikes, balks or anything pitcher related. An ump has 1 minute to make a decision and if nothing is conclusive, the play is ruled same as called and life moves on with no penalty to the manager or team.
His main objection was the length of delay a pitcher sustains during a replay challenge. How this is different than a pitcher sitting in between innings or waiting for an irate manager to argue a call is beyond me.
Of course, Bud also said he watched the disputed home run in the Colorado/San Diego game 100 times and couldn't conclude that it was a home run.
It clearly was.
Did I mention Josh Beckett is good?
